Libertyville edges Highland Park in second annual Sterny Classic

The Wildcats fought hard to get a 4-2 nonconference victory over visiting Highland Park that moved them to 8-5 on the season.

With the victory, Libertyville won the Sterny Classic, which is the name of the annual series between the Wildcats and Highland Park.

The two teams battle for a trophy that was created in honor of Gregg Sternaman, who died in 2009. Sternaman coached baseball at both Highland Park and Libertyville.

Giants honor former coach in 6-4 win over Libertyville

Gregg Sternaman was a beloved coach and figure for both Highland Park and Libertyville high schools. His charity, the Sterny Way Foundation, helped give kids the opportunity to participate in community athletic programs no matter what their financial means were.

Sternaman died on Dec 7, 2009 after batting cancer. In honor of him, both Highland Park and Libertyville, two communities where Sternaman has had a lasting legacy, honored him by playing the first annual Sterny Classic at the Milwaukee Brewers’ Miller Park.

He taught them about sports...and about life.

He laughed with them...and cried with them.

He was tough at times...and soft at others.

    But he was always genuine.

His shadow was long....and his legend immense.

But to know STERNAMAN...is to love him.
